Syllabus — Fall Semester — The History of the United States

Professor: Your Dad

Week 1: 1776–1783 — the American Revolution

Key topics: Paul Revere, Valley Forge, George Washington’s whole dental situation.

Homework: Watch The Patriot starring Mel Gibson. Oh, he’s canceled? Like, really canceled, or just kind of? They can’t actually cancel him, can they? I mean, Braveheart was so good…

Week 2: 1783–1789 — the framing of the Constitution

Key topics: Who were the framers, and why did they walk like gods among men? From where did they get their unassailable wisdom? Why is the Constitution so flawless, and why has it worked so perfectly from its writing to the present day?

Homework: Read one hagiography of a framer.

Week 3, 1789–1850 — ???

Key topics: Did anything happen during this period of history? I guess Andrew Jackson? The gold rush? I don’t know, we’ll think of something.

Homework: Not sure there’s anything to read or watch about this period of American history, so take a week off.
