Though I think I disagree with you about the “welfare state,” I agree that the point of a republic (going back it its earliest incarnations in the Roman Republic) is to balance the interests of the majority and the need for people to feel that their government is responsive to their desires with the rights of minorities and the goal of long-term stability. I would argue that our balance in the United States is out of whack.
