Letter Home After the First Week of School, 2021 Edition

Hello, 8th grade parents! As Vice-Principal of Nowhere Valley Middle School here in the heart of Texas, I’m excited to have your child here this year. We’ve had a great first week of in-person school! In this letter, I’ve included a few reminders that will help you and your child to make the most of middle school.

First, be ready for your child to take a big academic leap this year. We’re going to be moving into more complex material. Here are some examples:

In eighth grade, we emphasize interdisciplinary learning. Our math and biology teachers joined forces to come up with this problem for students to solve:

In a school with no mask mandate, thirty-eight students are seated less than three feet apart from one another for an hour. If Brayden C. comes to class with COVID on Tuesday, assuming an airborne virus variant with a reproduction rate of 7, how long until Jaden P.’s immunocompromised grandmother ends up in the hospital?

If you have been following the news, you know that our state legislature has passed some laws changing our curriculum.
